Refine singing skills at Cantabile 2013
Mount Carmel Ministries near Alexandria will host Cantabile 2013, a four-day musical workshop for church choirs, directors and singers, from June 13-16.
At the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to sing and examine more than 25 anthems for choirs of all ages, explore vocal and choral techniques and earn 15 hours of continuing education.
The clinicians are Rolf Anderson, Rikka Estenson and Kay Hoffland, all of whom have professional degrees in music education and performance.
Currently, they are teachers, clinicians and directors of youth, high school or adult choirs and have experience in colleges, public schools and churches.
Bruce Phelps, minister of music at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, will serve as a guest clinician. In 2008, he founded the Northern Lights Chorale, which he currently directs. He is a 1970 graduate of Concordia College and taught music in public schools for 34 years.
In 1995, Phelps was named the Outstanding Music Educator of Minnesota by the National Federation of State High School Associations. He also received the Outstanding Music Educator of Minnesota from the Minnesota Music Education Association in 1999-2000.
For 11 years, he served on the education staff at St. Olaf College. He has directed a variety of community choirs throughout the region and is a frequent guest clinician at numerous choral festivals.
