Red Cross seeks volunteers
The American Red Cross is currently recruiting volunteers for the West Central Minnesota Chapter serving Douglas, Grant and Traverse counties. The greatest need is for volunteers to assist with disaster response, both locally and nationally.
Tacy Fleener, an Alexandria resident, has been a Red Cross disaster volunteer for 30 years and recently volunteered with the Superstorm Sandy response.
"I recommend that anyone become a Red Cross volunteer. It's an experience of a lifetime," Fleener said.
Red Cross volunteers respond to a variety of disastersfrom single-family home fires to tornadoes and floods.
Local volunteers are needed to assist families with immediate needs after a disaster and ensure the Red Cross is prepared for future disaster responses. Volunteers also have the opportunity to deploy to national responses after they have had local experience.
The Red Cross is offering two disaster training classes for new volunteers at its Alexandria location in the coming month. An overview will be offered on April 23 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and disaster action team orientation will be offered on May 7 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Interested volunteers should contact Ken Voigt at the West Central Minnesota Red Cross at (320) 763-3800 or Kenneth.
Volunteers will need to complete a brief application and interview before attending classes. Contact Voigt by Friday, April 19 to allow enough time for these activities prior to the class offerings.
