Ready to run? Lakes Area EnduRUNce races set for May 14, 15
It's time to gear up for the first-ever "Lakes Area EnduRUNce" half-marathon and 5K on May 14-15.
The event is a fundraiser for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and an outreach effort of Lake Community Church.
Organizers plan to offer a 13.1 miles competitive half-marathon on Saturday, May 15 as well as a fun 5K walk/run on Friday, May 14 for those who are looking for a less competitive experience, according to Melissa Moore, coordinator.
Registration for Friday's events will take place at 6 p.m. at Lake Community Church. Saturday's registration is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. at Lake Geneva Bible Camp.
The early bird fee, which needs to be paid before noon on May 14, is $10 per family for the Fun Mile, $20 per person for the 5K and $35 per person for the half-marathon.
After noon on Friday, May 14, the fee for each race will be $10 more.
Both the 5K and the half-marathon are officially timed races.
The half-marathon will take place in east Alexandria, using the Central Lakes Trail near Highway 27, Birch Avenue, Geneva Road, County Road 73 and County Road 9.
The 5K course in northwest Alexandria will use County Road 44, Ridgewood Drive, South Darling Drive, Wallace Street, Woodcrest Road, Donna Drive and West Meadow Lane.
Runners and walkers will have a chance to win prizes in their age categories and for participating.
There is a keynote speaker planned for Friday evening. Ron Backes, a former Olympian shotputter, former Vikings chaplain and FCA guru, is set to speak at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Community Church.
In addition, a spaghetti banquet will follow the 5K and the Fun Mile at Lake Community Church.
One of the goals is to bring families into Alexandria for a weekend, Moore said. Organizers are hoping to draw between 100 and 300 runners for the half-marathon and several hundred more for the 5K.
All funds raised from this event will be used for teens who want to attend FCA camps.
