Ralph Drum, 90

Ralph "Sam" Drum, 90, passed away peacefully at West Wind Village the morning of March 10, 2009.

Ralph was born in Carlos Township on March 29, 1918 to Everett and Hattie (Kingston) Drum.

Ralph led quite an enviable life as a "jack of all trades." He and his brothers used to mow hay on land that his family owned on what is now Carlos State Park. He "rode the rails" as a teen, going to the west coast, Iowa and North Dakota to work as a farm laborer.

After serving in the military, he and his family returned to the states and purchased a farm east of Miltona prior to moving to Parkers Prairie, where they bought the Gamble store, and he focused on the plumbing and heating side of the business. He was also postmaster in Parkers Prairie for a time.

He will be missed for his wonderful sense of humor, jaunty attire, and always having time to listen to or tell a good story. Family was very important to him and he will be remembered as a passionate husband, loving father, fun grandfather, great-grandfather, dependable brother, independent son, good friend, trusted worker and more.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine (Ritten); his oldest daughter, Marcella, and her husband, Jerry Magnuson; grandson, Loren (Jill) Magnuson; his parents; his sister, Dorothy (Drum) Iverson; and his brothers, Harold and Walter Drum.

He is survived by and will be sorely missed by his son, Gary (Darlene) Drum of Morris; daughter, Rebecca (Kenny) Jerzak of Hudson, WI; daughter, Lisa (Ken) Schwab; eight grandchildren, ranging from age 16 to 48, Brian Magnuson, Sheila (Mark) Thompson, Kevin (Helen) Magnuson, Naomi (Dean) Lundin, Chad Drum, Katie Jo Jerzak, Patrick and Kaitlin Schwab; 13 great-grandchildren ages 10 to 23; brother, Donald Drum of Minneapolis; two sisters, Irene (Oscar) Lindgren of Hoffman and Grace (JR) Hohnholt of Commerce City, CO.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. The family will receive visitors an hour prior to the service at the church.

Ralph will be interred with Josephine at Gethsemane Cemetery in New Hope on March 23.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family at 19055 455th Ave., Morris MN 56267. Memorial funds will be used for the VFW where his children reside.
