From Quebec City to Alexandria: Mauvais Sort is the second international artist to perform as part of Midwest World Fest
Mauvais Sort, whose name translates from French to mean "to put a spell on someone," has a musical style, which is extremely hard to define, yet unique and true to its traditional roots.
This international group will be performing in Alexandria next week. They are the second Arts Midwest World Fest ensemble to visit Alexandria.
A free community workshop with Mauvais Sort will take place Thursday, March 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Alexandria Technical College in Room 743 (auditorium) in the south campus at 1601 Jefferson Street.
A community concert featuring Mauvais Sort will take place Saturday, March 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Discovery Middle School. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students.
Tickets are available through District 206 Community Education, 1410 McKay Avenue South, Suite 201, or by calling (320) 762-3310, extension 4275.
By combining traditional lyrics with contemporary musical compositions or by mixing their own original stories with old, folk rhythms, the group will turn your perception of Québec traditional music upside-down.
The band creates a new musical style: Folk 'n' roll.
"Folk" for the inspiration, the foot stomping, the accordion, the fiddle, and the guitar; and "roll" for the arrangements, the bass, the drum, the percussion, and the energy.
The young band members bring together their exceptional musical talents to delight audiences with a high-quality, high-energy show, infused with a passion for reinventing tradition.
"It's rare for small and mid-size Midwestern communities to host international groups like Mauvais Sort," said Bernice Wimmer, adult enrichment coordinator for Community Education. "The music and culture that Mauvais Sort shares is energetic, fun and different from what we typically hear. The ensemble will be in Alexandria for a full week and we expect this residency will be a delightful experience for our entire community."
According to Wimmer, Alexandria does not regularly have the resources to host weeklong residencies by international ensembles. Arts Midwest, a regional arts organization based in Minneapolis, funds much of the cost and handles the coordination of Arts Midwest World Fest tours in order to offer communities throughout the Midwest this rich international arts experience. Alexandria was selected as one of only nine Midwestern cities to host the 2009-11 Arts Midwest World Fest.
District 206 Community Education would like to thank 3M, Red Willow Arts Coalition, Alexandria Hotels and Hospitality, Hampton Inn, Diversity Resource Action Alliance, Senior College and the many people that helped bring this incredible opportunity to Alexandria, said Wimmer.
