Public hearing on feedlot is next Tuesday

To the editor:

I have been canoeing down the Chippewa River with my brother or other friends since I was a child. In the last few years there has been an improvement in the quality of the river and I have been seeing otters north of the carp dam located on Lake Jennie Road, and now an eagle has moved into the area around the river. Several landowners have seen a moose cow and calf on the river.

Since 2001, there have been samples taken to monitor the quality of the water in the Chippewa River.

We were notified last week by the Douglas County Land and Resource Management Department that a 996 feedlot was seeking a variance to build next to the river. If there were more than 1,000 cows, it would require an environmental study (that’s why it’s 996 cows).

We recently moved into a home next to the dam on Lake Jennie Road across the river from the proposed feed lot and were told we could only have two horses because of the proximity to the river.

For anyone interested, there is a public hearing being held in the County Commissioners Room located on the second floor of the Douglas County Courthouse at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
