The Prairie Valley Nighthawks will kick off their inaugural season this fall after Parkers Prairie and Eagle Valley paired in football this past off-season.

The two schools merged together after Eagle Valley went 10-1 and Parkers Prairie struggled through a 1-7 season. The Panthers' final game in 2011 came in a 62-10 loss that was handed out by a few of their new Eagle Valley teammates.

Only three letter winners return from that Rebels team. They will join a group of nine returning letter winners from Parkers Prairie who will be led by long-time head coach at Eagle Valley, John Sieling.

"I think the kids are meshing very well at the practices," Sieling said last Wednesday. "They have really come together to form a team. New name, new uniforms, everything split evenly between the schools made for a smooth transition for coaches and players."

Quarterback Logan Riedel is one of those three returning letter winners from the Rebels. Wide receiver Derek Meyer and running back Luke Mock join him as the other two.

Parkers Prairie RB/TE Tyler Schlosser is also back after being named to the All-Pheasant North Conference team last season. He was named the Panthers' MVP as a junior after rushing for 503 yards and six touchdowns, while accounting for 54 solo and 69 assisted tackles at linebacker.

The Nighthawks had a total of 43 players report for their first day of camp on August 13. Those numbers were evenly distributed across all four grades, which should bode well for the program moving forward.

"The junior high, junior varsity and varsity have numbers that will make the players work harder and become better football players," Sieling said. "Work hard and have fun seems to be the feeling of both coaches and players."

Sieling has more than 30 years of coaching experience at Eagle Valley. He will be joined on the staff by assistant head coach Jeff Blake and assistants Andy Lancaster and Mike Johnson.

"The team is working hard to get ready for their first game," Sieling said. "It should be an exciting first season for this Nighthawks team."

The Nighthawks will split their four home games between the Eagle Bend and Parkers Prairie fields. The season opener tomorrow, Thursday, will be against Brandon-Evansville in Eagle Bend. They will return to the same field against Underwood on September 21 before moving to Parkers Prairie for home games against Bertha-Hewitt (October 5) and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (October 17).
