Four members of the Pope and Douglas County 4-H program have been learning all they can about poultry in preparation for their trip to the National Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky where they will compete in the National Avian Bowl on November 17.

The conference recognizes 4-H members who have excelled in state 4-H poultry learning activities.

4-H'ers who will represent Minnesota at the event include Megen Way of Garfield, member of the Chippewans 4-H Club; Jill Cihlar of Glenwood and Zoey Gustafson of Starbuck, members of the Waska Wonders; and Jared Sorenson of Brooten, member of the Busy Beavers.

The bowl contest is patterned after the quiz bowl game shows popular in the 1950s. Its purpose is to encourage youth to expand knowledge of avian facts and become proficient in poultry management and related subjects; to serve as an award activity and trip for youth who have achieved superior levels of performance in state competition; to help youth with career guidance and to promote the poultry industry by stimulating interest in poultry and other avian species; and to make learning fun.

At the conference, youth will have the opportunity to learn more about the poultry industry through tours and seminars.

The youth have been raising funds to help with trip expenses. Their last fundraiser will be held on Friday, November 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Hatchery Bar and Grill in Lowry. Youth and coaches will serve for a portion of the evening's proceeds.

4-H is a youth development program that offers a variety of learning opportunities for anyone in grades K-13.
