For a squad with just two seniors, it was assumed that there would be several bumps in the road on a rebuilding year, but the Cardinal wrestlers proved that youth can be a good thing, going 11-6 for the season in dual meet competition, finishing as the Central Lakes Conference runners-up and in the top four of Section 8AAA.

"This team really stepped it up over the season," said Alexandria head coach Tom Ellison. "Their confidence grew each week and they really came together late in the season when it mattered most.

"With only two seniors on the squad, the wrestlers are very motivated to make even bigger noise next year in the CLC and section."

One of those two seniors was Tony Hubbard, a middle weight. Hubbard finished the year with a spot in the state tournament, and capped his career with 318 takedowns, including the most of any Cardinal this season with 99.

It was Hubbard's second straight state tournament appearance. He also reached the 75 career win mark in his final season.

"Tony brought an exciting style to the wrestling mats as he could score big points from any position," said Ellison.

Andrew Moske, the other senior on the team, wrestled in the varsity lineup for several years.

"Andrew had a passion for the sport of wrestling that was contagious to anyone that was around him," said his coach.

Trent Piepenburg was named the most valuable wrestler and had the most pins of any varsity member with 20.

Tristan Johnson was named the most dedicated and Mike Schluter the most improved. Dylan Kriese earned the diamond in the rough award.

Two other wrestlers were state participants as Blake Olhausen and Justin Cumberbatch both advanced, with Cumberbatch earning runner-up honors.

Cumberbatch reached the 60 career win mark, while Piepenburg hit the 100 win level.

Piepenburg, Shawn Nelson and Jacob Schiltgen will serve as captains next season.
