Peck, Vogeler medal for Alexandria
Mitch Peck and John Vogeler represented the Alexandria track and field team in podium finishes at the state track and field meet on Saturday at Hamline University.
Peck wrapped up his high school career with a fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 39.92.
“I had a really good start, and just holding on to that was probably the biggest thing,” Peck said of his finish. “Finishing strong and trying to get over that last hurdle.”
With spikes on during the race, Peck said Saturday’s steady rain did not bother him too much. He tried to stay relaxed and it paid off as Peck felt he had one of his better hurdles races of the season.
“Pretty much just have fun,” Peck said. “That’s what my coaches said: Just relax and have fun. I came out and stayed relaxed and that’s when I run my best races.”
VOGELER FIFTH IN LONG JUMP
Vogeler fought through the wet conditions to finish fifth in the long jump with a distance of 21-07.00.
A podium finish was not bad for Vogeler as this was his first season as a member of the Cardinals track and field team.
“I had some pretty solid jumps,” Vogeler said. “Not my best, but with these conditions, it’s pretty hard to get your best when it’s downpouring.”
Vogeler set his goals to finish in the top three, but he was still satisfied with fifth place.
The rain bothered many of the field athletes who were scheduled to jump on Saturday morning. Vogeler said he slipped on one of his attempts and was unable to jump, instead just running through the pit.
“It was pretty slick,” he said. “You just try to keep your feet going and get a good plant and jump.”
With Peck and Vogeler both medaling at the state meet, Alexandria finished tied for 28th along with Rocori and Bemidji with 11 team points.
