Patchouli featured at Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale
National touring guitar duo Patchouli is returning Alexandria as featured musicians at Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale (SAWA) on Friday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Master guitarist Bruce Hecksel is the acoustic lead guitar player, teamed with Julie Patchouli, who uses her voice and percussive guitar.
Patchouli's sound has been described as "the harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel meet the guitar brilliance of the Gypsy Kings."
Both Hecksel and Patchouli studied at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and together are a songwriting duo. Over the past 14 years of touring the country, they have played more than 2,500 shows.
Patchouli is as busy in the studio as it is on the road. It just released a new CD, "Anything is Possible," its 16th album recorded together and will celebrate the new release at its Friday SAWA performance.
One of the songs from the new album won a Songs for Trees Award.
"We were in the studio between shows in the fall, recording new songs we'd been writing on the road for the last two years," said Patchouli. "It's very lyric-driven with lots of melodic new styles of guitar and rhythms."
With its original blend of folk meets flamenco, Patchouli has made Alexandria a regular tour stop for several years and enjoys being part of Art in the Park each July and playing at Carlos Creek Winery on occasion.
SAWA is located at 115 Sixth Avenue just off Broadway in Alexandria.
