Passion drama cancelled because of wintry weather
Alexandria Minnesota 225 7th Ave E
P.O. Box 549

The annual Passion Drama presented by members of Zion Lutheran and Good Shepherd Lutheran churches of Alexandria has been cancelled this year due to the weather.

In its 14-year history, this is the first time the drama has been cancelled.

"Many hours of time go into preparing such a community outreach, which makes the decision to cancel the drama this year that much more difficult," noted Jeff Roste, event organizer. "We needed to not only look toward the concern of those coming to view the drama but also the safety and health of our members who are presenting the drama.  We felt it was in the best interest due to the projected temperatures to make this decision."

"It is with heavy hearts and minds seeking wisdom that we have prayerfully decided to cancel," added Zion Pastor David Hinz. "It is a customary tradition during Lent to give up something order to spend time focusing ourselves on Christ and his passion. It is an odd thing that we would remove such a prominent piece of our identity this year."

Zion Lutheran Church will instead open its sanctuary on Sunday, March 24 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for anyone wishing to come and pray.

"We will be praying for our congregation, the Passion Drama, the community, and all other needs that you bring with you," Hinz said.

Also, in an effort to carry over a part of the drama, the churches will incorporate the crucifixion scene adjacent to the Guarding of the Tomb, which will go on as originally scheduled.

This scene will begin at 7 a.m. and run through 7 p.m on Good Friday, March 29, at which time Jesus will be taken down from the cross and laid in the tomb. The guarding of the tomb will then take place through Easter morning.

Everyone is invited to drive by to view the scene, or to park in the Zion parking lot at 3rd Avenue and Lake Street and walk up to the scene.
