Out and About: United Way's Adopt a Family program

(Contributed photo)

The United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties' office in Alexandria looked like a workshop for Santa's elves Monday.

Volunteers from the community helped the United Way wrap presents as part of its "Adopt a Family" program.

Here's how it works: Those who are in need of Christmas presents, such as clothing and toys, call the United Way for help. Those who want to "adopt" a family contact the United Way, get a family's Christmas wish list fulfilled and bring the gifts to United Way.

Then, all the items are packaged and wrapped for the families to pick up.

This year, the program is helping 87 families and more than 200 children in Douglas and Pope counties.
