Osakis tennis sweeps conference tournament
The Osakis tennis team swept their way to a first place finish at the Prairie Conference tournament in Long Prairie last Saturday.
The Silverstreaks headed into the tournament as the first seed in all seven individual brackets, and they did not disappoint with seven championships.
The wins gave Osakis seven team points in the tournament for a first place finish. West Central Area finished in second place with 16 team points, while Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa finished in third with 21 points.
Head coach Ryan Maddock said the players knew they would have the opportunity to sweep the conference tournament if they had a good day, especially if they played well at some of the tougher flights.
“If we played well, we thought it would be a possibility,” Maddock said. “The number one doubles flight had the toughest competition for us, so we were pleased to win that flight along with all the rest.”
At first singles, Taylor Kraemer beat Cassandra Hoppe from BBE in the second round of play, 6-1 and 6-1, to put her in the championship match. Then she played Lauryn McLaughlin of West Central Area, who she beat 6-0, 6-1 to claim the first singles championship.
Osakis’ Hannah Baker began her run at the second singles title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mackenzie Winter in the second round. Then she beat Regan Biss of WCA 6-1, 6-1 in the championship round.
Alexa Hoffarth opened play in the second round of the third singles flight with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Morgan Pastian of BBE. Then she won 6-3, 6-0 to claim the title over Taylor Endreson of WCA.
In fourth singles, Hannah Szech opened second round play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ally Ecker of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area. Then she won 6-1, 6-1 over Ali Veldhouse in the championship round.
The first doubles team of Katie Anderson and Katelyn Foster had the toughest road to a title for the Silverstreaks in the conference tournament. In the second round of the tournament, Anderson and Foster needed a third-set tiebreaker win to get into the championship round. Their second round win was 4-6, 7-5 (10-6) over Dawn Cleveland and Brittany Randt from West Central Area to get into the championship round.
In the championship match they needed another third-set tiebreaker win to claim the first doubles championship. They beat Daisha Meyer and Mattea Eckstein from BBE 2-6, 6-4 (10-6) to claim the title.
Peyton Garcia and Elyse Wiener opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hannah Heuer and Amanda Tschida of LPGE/USA 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the second doubles flight. Then the Osakis team won 7-5, 6-0 in the championship match over Marissa Hayward and McKenna Blehr of WCA.
In the third doubles flight, Ashley Kraemer and Morgan Silbernick opened play without losing a game to Whitney Eckel and Allison Gugglberger of LPGE/USA. They won the match 6-0, 6-0.
