Osakis tennis: Streaks looking for third straight trip to state
The Osakis tennis team did not disappoint in their final home match of the season, rolling to a 7-0 victory over Sauk Centre on Tuesday.
The win pushed their season record to 16-1. After losing their first match of the season Monday against Foley, the Silverstreaks were looking at the match as experience gained before the section tournament.
“The Foley match helps make us stronger by the level of competition they provided us,” head coach Ryan Maddock said. “They were the best team we played this year. We played a lot of tough opponents on the road this year and feel that will make us ready to go at tournament time.”
In their match against Sauk Centre, singles players Taylor Kraemer, Hannah Baker, Alexa Hoffarth and Hannah Szech won in straight sets. In doubles, Katelyn Foster and Katie Anderson won at No. 1, Elyse Wiener and Carley Uhlenkamp won at No. 2 and Peyton Garcia and Missy Weir won at No. 3.
The Silverstreaks had one more match on their schedule for Thursday in Parkers Prairie. After that the team Section 6A playoffs begin Wednesday, October 9.
After her match on Tuesday, Kraemer said the Silverstreaks’ goal in the section tournament is to make a state appearance for a third consecutive year. Kraemer also played in the individual state tournament last season.
“Hopefully we can go our third year in a row,” she said. “That’s definitely a goal, obviously we’ve gone two years in a row as a team and I’ve gone individually.”
The Silverstreaks feel that they have collectively gotten stronger as a team over the past few seasons. This gives them confidence to return to the state tournament later this month.
“If we just keep our heads up and, knowing what we’ve done in our previous years, I think we can definitely do it,” Kraemer said. “Every year we’ve gotten stronger, and I feel like that’s definitely beneficial for us.”
Although the players were disappointed about their first loss Monday, they said the experience of playing a tough team will help them in section play.
“We earned a lot more from losing to Foley than we would beating somebody else,” Anderson said.
Over the last few years, the Silverstreaks played their best tennis during the section tournaments. They are confident about their chances again this year after coming off a nearly perfect season.
“We know we will need good, consistent efforts throughout the team and are confident we can get that,” Maddock said. “The last two years we have played our best at section time and are hopeful for a repeat of that this year.”
The section tournament begins October 9 at Team Fitness Evolution in Sartell.
