Osakis nine downs Pequot Lakes
The Osakis baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season with an 11-6 win over Pequot Lakes on Monday night.
The Silverstreaks were down two starters with Brandon Giesler on a trip and Michael Herringshaw sick. That meant freshman Jeff Piekarski got his first varsity start at catcher, and he contributed with his first hit, a walk and a run scored.
“Jeff did a great job filling in and in a tough position,” head coach Shad Schmidt said. “Jeff had quality at-bats. He walked once and got a hit, which was a pretty good varsity debut for a 15-year-old kid.”
The Silverstreaks’ offense got big nights from seniors Jordan Frederick, Drew Fearing and Lane Berberich. Frederick had two hits, three RBIs, two runs and a walk. Fearing added three hits, two runs, four RBIs and a hit-by-pitch, while Berberich had four hits and four runs scored.
“Some guys have really stepped up and have taken the team on their backs while others need to contribute more,” Schmidt said. “We have to stop making some mistakes in the field, and we are leaving too many runners on base. I do feel like we had better at-bats today and we made good adjustments to their pitching.”
Frederick, Fearing and Hunter Scherr all threw on the mound with Scherr earning the win. He went three innings, scattering six hits but allowing just two runs. He struck out two. Frederick went three innings and struck out three, while Fearing allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in one inning of work.
The win for Osakis was its first of the year against a Class AA school and it came against a subsection foe in Pequot Lakes. The Silverstreaks got there by opening up the game a little bit with a five-run third inning. Frederick and Fearing both had two-RBI base hits in that frame.
