After trailing by 13 points at halftime, the Osakis girls’ basketball team closed the gap against Sauk Centre to within two points midway through the second half in the Section 6AA semifinals on Saturday.

But the Mainstreeters collected some key offensive rebounds in the final few minutes of the game and held on for a 49-44 win at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Head coach Pat Kalpin said the 13 point deficit at halftime was just too much for the Silverstreaks to overcome in the second half.

“We just dug too big of a hole that first half against a good team like that,” Kalpin said. “We made a hell of a push in that second half, we just couldn’t get over that hump.”

Annalise Savageau led the Silverstreaks with 19 points while Forsell finished second on the team with nine. Madison Moritz led the Mainstreeters with 13 points while Julie Bushard finished with 10.

After starting slow, the Silverstreaks still felt good about their chances after closing the gap to only two. But the Mainstreeters grabbed some key rebounds to keep Osakis from completing the comeback.

“I think we started off a little rough, but we worked hard and we started coming back,” senior Brooke Sorenson said.

The loss was especially disappointing after the Silverstreaks lost to the Mainstreeters in the sub-section tournament last season.

“It’s hard losing just by five, and we lost to them last year in the same round of playoffs,” Savageau said. “But it is what it is.”
