Osakis boys basketball plays through injuries

The Osakis boys’ basketball team went 1-1 this week despite having three starters miss time with injuries.

The Silverstreaks won a 49-46 home game against Sebeka on Thursday and lost a 56-43 contest to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle the next night in Long Prairie. On Thursday, they won without Haden Hendricks, who was out with a concussion, and Drew Fearing, who suffered a pulled muscle in his shoulder. Those injuries kept them out of Friday’s game against LPGE along with John Boogaard, who was suffering from a strained neck.

In Osakis’ win on Thursday, Zach Weir led the offense with 24 points and Hunter Scherr also finished with 12. Head coach Matt Hoelscher was happy with the play of the team’s two leading scorers after Sebeka’s defense was focused on slowing down Lane Berberich.

“They locked on to Lane, which allowed other guys to step up, and they did,” Hoelscher said. “We got great minutes from our bench, especially when our guys are out with injuries or foul trouble.”

Injury troubles caught up with the Silverstreaks Friday as they were unable to stick with LPGE.

Hoelscher was happy with the way the team played, as they were down three starters. Scherr led the Osakis scoring with 16 points, and Berberich finished with 12.

“Hunter and Lane played great for us; they became our only scoring options for a while,” Hoelscher said. “We got them open on offense, and they hit shots when they had to.”

The Silverstreaks started their schedule for this week with a home game against Holdingford on Monday and also play Friday on the road in Upsala.
