Osakis advances past LPGE

The Osakis softball team scored nine runs in the second and third innings against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Tuesday afternoon, giving it plenty of run support to advance past the first round of the Section 6AA tournament.

Osakis won the game 12-4 and faced Staples Motley on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the tournament.

The Silverstreaks started to make their move on Tuesday after they went to the bottom of the third inning tied 2-2 with LPGE. An RBI single from Jenna Fearing and a two-RBI single from Brooke Waldorf were part of a five run inning that gave Osakis a 7-2 lead. After starting pitcher Amber Giese retired LPGE’s three hitters in the top half of the fourth, back-to-back run-producing doubles from Alecia Kaelke and Mackenzie Staloch helped Osakis score four more runs and take an 11-2 lead.

LPGE would score two runs in the fifth inning, but Giese held them scoreless for the rest of the game to pick up the win.

After the game, the Silverstreaks’ hitters said they felt confident after starting the tournament by scoring 12 runs.

“It’s really nice to go in with that confidence with how we played today,” Staloch said.

Osakis was seeded second in the section’s west division, but they defeated top-seeded Minnewaska 10-2 in their only head-to-head game this season. The players feel they have a shot to continue advancing if they play as well as they did Tuesday.

“I feel like we should just come in strong and play as best as we can,” Kaelke said.

Head coach John Stigman said the Silverstreaks had been struggling a little offensively in the past few games. After Staloch missed five games with a concussion, she was back in the lineup and went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored.

“Mackenzie came back today, had some big hits for us and we seemed to get a few of the breaks that we haven’t been getting,” Stigman said.
