A new stake was created on May 3, 2009, from the Duluth, Anoka and Minneapolis stakes. President Randal Baker was called as the stake president and has since organized leadership, acquired office space, and planned for the future growth of the church in central Minnesota.

The new stake serves 3,000 members in local congregations in Alexandria, Wadena, Willmar, Buffalo, St. Cloud, Elk River, Hutchinson, Brainerd and Princeton, including a congregation geared to young single adults.

The term stake is taken from the Old Testament imagery of the desert tent, which was held in place by long stakes driven in the ground around the tent to hold it firm and secure in times of fierce winds.

In some other Christian faiths such a grouping of geographical congregations is called a diocese or a synod.

The church has 30,000 members in eight stakes in Minnesota and more than 13 million members in 2,865 stakes and more than 27,000 congregations worldwide.

All are invited to local LDS worship services, which are held Sundays at 10 a.m. at the meetinghouse at 1427 Lake St. in Alexandria. The administrative offices for the new stake are in Sartell.
