Nersten leads Hillcrest past B-E boys

The Brandon-Evansville boys couldn’t slow down Hillcrest’s Daniel Nersten as the senior scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Comets to a 53-30 Little Eight Conference win last Friday night.

Nersten set the tone early in this one as he scored 18 points in the opening half. That led to a 30-14 lead for his team that Hillcrest never came close to relinquishing.

“He’s a player,” Chargers head coach John Holsten said of Nersten. “He can bring it up, he can post up, he can shoot from long distance. We couldn’t deal with him early, and we just couldn’t keep him off the glass, as well.”

Brandon-Evansville was also without its top scorer after Skyler Quinn went out with an ankle injury early in the game. Brandon Christianson tried to make up for that loss by putting in 10 points and grabbing five rebounds. McKenon Plaster added seven points, but no other Chargers player had more than four.

The Comets finished the game 22-of-43 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. They also outrebounded Brandon-Evansville 34-17.

“If they missed the shot, they were getting second ones,” Holsten said. “If we missed, we weren’t getting any offensive rebounds.”

Brandon-Evansville couldn’t get much going on offense all night. The Chargers shot 8-of-31 from the field.

The loss dropped Brandon-Evansville to 2-11 overall and to 0-7 in the LEC. Hillcrest moved to 9-4 with the win and to 5-1 in league play.
