Nelson wins second Lakes Area Classic
Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this spring with a tournament of eight prior champions competing before Justin Nelson won the championship flight of the classic on May 31.
Greg Mattson won the tournament of champions on May 30 by edging Tyler Whiting in a playoff. Both golfers shot a 73 through 18 holes before Mattson secured the win with a par in the playoff.
That set the stage for Saturday’s tournament, where Nelson won his second Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic after winning the event in 2012. The former St. Cloud State University golfer shot a 75 at the Alexandria Golf Club and a 37 on the back. He used birdies on holes 12 and 16 to secure the win.
This year’s tournament also featured just the second hole-in-one in the history of the event as Troy Hagen aced the par-three seventh hole at AGC.
