The Alexandria Area Music Teachers Association (AAMTA) hosted its first local music exams event last weekend at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria.

Previously, local students were required to drive an hour or more to take theory, keyboard skills, sight-playing and comprehensive piano exams.

AAMTA will also host the Piano Preliminaries contest at Discovery Middle School on January 26, as well as another round of exams and the Music Bridges event in April.

The Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) West District Ensemble Festival was held Sunday, November 11 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria.

Among the 18 ensembles, there were piano-violin, piano-flute and piano-piano ensembles with up to two pianos and four musicians performing at a time.

Musical arrangements included works by world-renowned and local composers, and attendees were treated with a performance by four local teachers.

This annual event is held each November and is free to the public.
