He takes over for Lori Mork, who retired from the position this month after 17 years with the paper.

A new sports reporter will be joining the Echo Press sports team soon, which demonstrates the newspaper's continued commitment of providing Douglas County area sports fans with the results, information, features and photos from sporting events throughout the region.

"We're fortunate to have a seasoned sports reporter take on the job that Lori was so dedicated to over the years," said Publisher Jody Hanson. "Eric has shown us from the start that he is passionate about sports and he's developed a strong working relationship with local coaches and players."

Morken also takes full advantage of social media. Besides writing a blog on the newspaper's website, he's built a list of more than 350 followers of his Twitter account and frequently "tweets" breaking updates about big games and developing sports stories. Readers can follow Eric Morken on Twitter @echo_sports.

Morken is excited about taking on the challenge.

"I'm looking forward to my new role as sports editor," he said. "We will continue to use all the latest avenues through the Internet and print to produce great coverage for Douglas County sports fans."
