Mitch Gesell named to All-Academic track team
Former Alexandria runner Mitch Gesell became one of five members from the St. John's University track and field team to be recognized with a prestigious post-season award recently.
Gesell was named to the 2009 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Men's All-Academic team on July 6. To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III indoor or outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
Gesell was an eight-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) performer during his time with the Johnnies. He provisionally qualified in the 800 meters during the 2009 outdoor season. Gesell graduated in May with a 3.42 GPA in biology.
St. John's had the most student-athletes selected to the all-academic team in the MIAC. The Johnnies finished second at the 2009 MIAC Outdoor Championships in May. They also led the MIAC in both the NCAA Division III Coaches Power Rankings at No. 9 and the Al Carius Men's Program of the Year Award standings at No. 11.
