Mistakes lead to 42-10 loss in Brainerd
The Alexandria football team headed into halftime down 14-10 to Brainerd, but second half mistakes hurt them in a 42-10 loss on the road last Friday.
Mike Empting said before the game that the team who can limit the turnovers would have the best chance of coming out of the game with a win. But the Cardinals struggled with that again on Friday.
"We struggled with putting the ball on the ground, bad snaps and field position," Empting said.
The Cardinals scored their only touchdown of the game on a four-yard Mitch Peck touchdown run in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
After Brainerd scored a touchdown in the second quarter, Danny Kuhn hit a field goal to put the Cardinals down 14-10 at halftime.
But in the second half, Brainerd scored two touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to put 28 unanswered points on the board.
As a team, the Cardinals rushed for 167 yards. Quarterback John Vogeler accounted for 91 of those yards on the ground, and he was 7-14 passing for 83 yards.
Peck rushed 19 times for 77 yards in the game with a touchdown.
On defense, the Cardinals gave up 286 yards on 48 rushing attempts by Brainerd. They also gained 70 yards of passing offense in the game.
The Cardinals were led on defense by Aaron Steidl with six solo tackles and Riley Hvezda with five solo tackles.
The next game for the Cardinals will be this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rocori for their homecoming game.
