Minnesota Destinations: Proctor and Spirit Mountain
Explore Proctor Speedway and Spirit Mountain Adventure Park.
Proctor is just two hours from the Twin Cities and minutes from Duluth's Canal Park and the Aerial Lift Bridge. This friendly community has a great golf course, dirt racetrack, fairgrounds, dirt floor horse and indoor ice arenas, and walking, biking and roller blading trails.
While you're in Proctor, visit:
F-101F Voodoo Jet is a memorial dedicated to Captains James L. Verville and Sherman Gonyea, Proctor graduates who died in a plane crash in December of 1971, and to all who gave their lives for the privilege of freedom. The memorial sits on top of a hill and overlooks Proctor.
Engine 225 Baldwin-Yellowstone is the largest and most powerful steam engine ever built. It hauled more than 44 million tons of iron ore from the Mesabi and Vermillion ranges. When it was retired in 1961, the 225 had traveled approximately 694,360 miles. The DM&IR Railway Company donated the 225 to the citizens of Proctor in August of 1963.
Proctor Speedway/Fairgrounds: The track hosts Sunday night races and September's Silver 1000, one of the Midwest's most prestigious dirt track stockcar events.
Proctor Golf Course: Visitors are always welcome to this nine-hole municipal course, with rolling hills and challenging fairways. Located right in the middle of town. Tee times not always required.
Proctor is the primary entrance to Spirit Mountain Adventure Park and has convenient access to snowmobile trails and the Willard Munger and Superior Hiking Trails.
