Minnesota Destinations: Ely
Ely offers up a national park and Kabetogama Lake.
Kabetogama Lake, Voyageurs National Park is a very special place. Voyageurs National Park consists of preserved landscapes and scenic waterways that shaped the route of the North American fur traders and defined the border between the United States and Canada. The park and its diverse resources provide outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation, scientific study, sport fishing, education and appreciation of the majestic, forested lake country setting.
Kabetogama Lake is dotted with more than 200 remote and scenic islands that maintain their beauty through harsh winter storms, and produce rich foliage and wild berries in summer. Situated along the U.S. Canadian border in Minnesota, Kabetogama Lake has miles of spectacular shoreline and 25,000 acres of clean water and is one of four major lakes that make up Voyageurs National Park.
Anglers who long for wide open spaces and fantastic fishing will revel in the cool, clean waters and solitude of Kabetogama. The lake is navigable by motorboat, pontoon, houseboats, canoes and kayaks.
If you want to experience the "great outdoors," canoes, kayaks and complete outfitting services are available for you to camp out under the stars and visit the wild.
Explore the hiking trails to witness the naturally beautiful plants, birds and wildlife. Some are even lucky enough to get a glimpse of many animals from wolves, black bears, deer and moose that call this home.
At certain times of the year, blueberries, raspberries and even wild strawberries can also be found on trails. Numerous bird species also make this area a birders paradise.
Visit the Kabetogama Visitor Center to learn more about the area, from tour boat rides, interpretive programs, camping and hiking information.
Small resorts or a variety of medium to large resorts are available to provide a choice of services. Some have play areas for children and others rent everything down to complete fishing equipment packages. You may choose to cook meals at your cottage or eat out at a variety of dining facilities. Supportive services are available in the area to supply your vacation needs.
Stay at a resort for a full day of fishing, camping, hiking, snowmobiling and so much more! All are offered at beautiful and scenic Lake Kabetogama.
