The Alexandria City Council is deciding what to do with the city-owned lot, which needs repairs.

At the council's June 23 meeting, a small group of downtown merchants spoke at a public hearing. They said that the lot needed to be resurfaced but most of them felt the city's proposed project, at a cost of $412,072, was too extravagant.

They wanted a scaled back plan.

The council directed City Engineer Tim Schoonhoven to prepare preliminary layout options and cost estimates for the Fillmore Street parking lot.

The information will be presented at City Hall on July 10, starting at 5 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the various options, choose one design, and make a recommendation to the city council at its meeting on July 14.

Copies of the parking lot layout options are available for review at City Hall.
