Marvin Kalsbeck, age 73, of Big Stone City, S.D., died April 16, 2009 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris. Funeral services were held Monday, April 20 at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank, S.D. Rev. Kenneth Reed and Rev. Beth Conrad officiated and burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Big Stone City. Casket bearers were: Gerald Kalsbeck, Roger Kalsbeck, Kevin Konold, Kerry Konold, John Grossman, Rick Grossman, Joe Kill, and Doug Streed. Honorary bearers were his co-workers at Wilkens Industries of Morris; the coffee gang in Chokio; and his grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchild.

Marvin Lane Kalsbeck was born Nov. 21, 1935, in Estelline, S.D. He was the son of Gerrit and Katherine (Katze) Kalsbeck. He attended school in Estelline. He was united in marriage on June 7, 1957, with Judith Everson. The union was blessed with two daughters, Lori and Annalisa. Marvin served in the United States Army from 1958-1960, was honorably discharged and returned to Estelline. Marvin worked as a blacksmith with his father and owned and operated Kalsbeck Manufacturing Company for many years. He later worked as a truck driver for Municipal Castings Inc. in Madison. Marvin was a welder/foreman for 17 years with Wilkens Industries of Morris.

Marvin moved to Big Stone City in 1985. He was united in marriage on Nov. 21, 1986, with Janet (Kruse) Konold in Sparks, Nev. Marvin volunteered as a fireman, an ambulance EMT and was a member of the Commercial Club. He enjoyed auto racing and was part of the pit crew for a modified race car team. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchild. Marvin also enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycle and enjoyed horses. He was always working on home improvements, enjoying lawn care and gardening.

Marvin Kalsbeck is survived by his wife, Janet of Big Stone City, S.D.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Lori and Thomas Caron of Marshall; Annalisa and Shawn Reed of Bruce, S.D.; three step children: Kevin and Cindy Konold of Clear Lake, S.D.; Kimberly and Jeff Burg of Wessington Springs, S.D.; Kerry and Dawn Konold of Mobridge, S.D.; five grandchildren; nine step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Milo and Arnold; and one sister: Sylvia.

Mundwiler Funeral Home of Milbank, S.D. was in charge of the arrangements for Marvin Kalsbeck.
