Mark Balk, 52

Mark Urban Balk, 52, died March 8, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

Mark was born April 24, 1956 in Adrian to Lloyd and Mildred (Lais) Balk. He attended school at Our Lady Of Good Council Catholic School through the 6th grade. Mark worked at Scholtes Store delivering groceries in Wilmot during his high school years and graduated from Worthington High School in 1974.

After his schooling, Mark went to work for Commodore's, manufacturing mobile homes in Worthington, and moved to Montevideo to work for Friendship Homes. For the last 20 years he has worked for Mid Central Steel as an ironworker and been a member of the local 512 ironworkers since March 1, 1997. In 1997, Mark met Marianne and they were united in marriage on April 12, 2003 at Lake Community Church in Alexandria. The couple has made their home in Alexandria since 2003.

Mark enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, collecting coins, camping, spending time with family and was a MOPAR fan. One of Mark's biggest accomplishments has been his 22 years of sobriety since February 28, 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne of Alexandria; daughters, Autumn (Josh) Rathbun of Sevierville, TN and Angie (Brian) Meyer of Ocheyedan, IA; grandson, Jacob Meyer; stepchildren, Wanique (Kalin) Evenson of Montevideo and Simeon Peterson of Benson; step-grandchildren, Trew, Bane and Keene Evenson; brothers, David (friend, DeeDee Ward) Balk of Buffalo, Don (Pat) Balk of Worthington and Bill (Julie) Balk of Wilmot; sisters, Juliann (Jerry) Sturn of Maple Plain and Mary Ellen (Clayton) Strain of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mildred; stepson, Gabriel Peterson; and aunts and uncles.

A memorial service was held on Friday, March 13 at Lake Community Church in Alexandria.

Inurnment will be held at Swift Falls Cemetery in Swift Falls.
