Lundeen, Mounsdon take honor in essay contest
Viking Branch 136, Fleet Reserve Association in Minneapolis announced that Evansville students Brook Mounsdon and Jill Lundeen were winners of the Americanism essay contest. The title for the essay this year was "What Memorial Day Means to Me."
Mounsdon, a 9th grader, placed 2nd. Lundeen, a 12th grader, earned 1st place.
Lundeen's essay was forwarded to the regional level for judging, and then the 1st place winners there are forwarded to the National Committee for judging.
Lundeen also won 1st place at the regional level and received a bond, a plaque, and a $1,000 scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth. At the national level, Lundeen was awarded 2nd place and received a plaque and a $3,000 savings bond.
