Loren Skonberg, 85
Loren Robert Skonberg, 85, Glenwood, died March 7, 2009 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Glenwood with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Loren Robert Skonberg was born September 27, 1923 to Hjalmer and Olga (Mattson) Skonberg in Clinton, Iowa. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1943, then served in the Army Air Force in England. After the war he attended the University of Iowa, the American Academy of Horology in Denver, Colorado, and the Bradly University in Peoria, Illinois. Loren moved to California and worked for Douglas Aircraft during the Korean War. He moved back to Minneapolis and worked at Power's Department Store in the watch and clock repair division and at Minneapolis Honeywell in the research department.
On October 18, 1953, Loren was united in marriage to Rose Painschab in Buffalo, Minnesota. In 1955, they moved to New Mexico where Loren was employed at the Los Alamos scientific laboratory until 1961 when they moved back to Minnesota and operated Skonberg's Jewelry store until 1969. He worked for the city municipal store until he retired in 1986.
He was a longtime member of the Masons, the VFW and the American Legion. He belonged to the National Association of watch and clock collectors and enjoyed setting up for auctions and collecting antiques. Loren especially enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Skonberg of Glenwood; daughter, Sandy (Mike) O'Brien of Glenwood; son Douglas (Linda) Skonberg; granddaughters, Jean (David) Boll and Jamie (Matt) White; grandson, Lawrence (Heather) Skonberg; one great-granddaughter, Mia Skonberg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Loren is preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Olga Skonberg; son, David; brother, Glenn; and sister, Shirley.
Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
