Logan Doyle suffers knee injury at SDSU
Alexandria's Logan Doyle suffered a setback after just getting his college basketball career started during summer practices for the South Dakota State men's basketball program in mid-July.
Doyle was going through team activities when he suffered a knee injury that is expected to keep him out of practice until at least November. The 6'8" forward was sprinting down the court near the baseline when he planted and tried to cut.
Doyle dislocated his patella on the play. He tore his medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) and also suffered two bone chips. He underwent surgery on August 1 and the recovery process is expected to take at least three months before he can resume any basketball activities.
"It could have been a lot worse," Doyle said by phone on Monday afternoon. "Before surgery, the doctor came and talked to us about all that could be wrong with the knee. I didn't want it to happen, but I'm glad it happened freshman year rather than senior year. I guess I'm fortunate in a sense that it wasn't as bad as it could have been."
It was still disappointing for Doyle, who was just starting to feel more comfortable with the college level of play. Doyle knew he was going to be the smallest post player on the SDSU team when he got there for workouts this summer. It took a while to adjust to the physicality during team activities in June.
"But July came and all the coaches said I was having a good July," he said. "We didn't know if I would redshirt or not, none of the freshmen did, but they said I was improving a lot."
Doyle will definitely use a redshirt after the injury. Having a year to work on his game and get bigger through a college weight program is something he knows will ultimately benefit him over the course of his career with the Jackrabbits.
"Everyone coming in, you don't want to redshirt," Doyle said. "But I think for me, post wise, redshirting might be good. I think I'll get more out of it next year when I play for the first time.
"The college game is just so much more physical than the high school game. Everyone thinks you have to put the time in the gym and nowhere else. In reality, you need a lot of time in the weight room. The biggest thing for me is I get a whole other year to improve and gain weight and get stronger."
