Local teens urged to enter safe driving contest

Micaela Swenson, who created the poster "Pocket the Phone or Pocket the Ticket," was the winner of the first local safe driving contest in 2012. Teens in Douglas County are now encouraged to enter the 2013 safe driving poster and video contest by creating a poster or 30-second video. (Contributed photo)

Teens in Douglas County are encouraged to enter the 2013 poster and video contest to encourage their peers to buckle up or learn the dangers of distracted driving.

Douglas County Safe Communities Coalition is encouraging students in grades 9-12 to come up with a creative idea and make a computer-generated or hand-drawn poster or a 30-second video.

The top winning teens will win $100 and see their creation used locally in various activities and events throughout Douglas County.

New this year, a people's choice award will also be given, based on the highest number of "likes" on Facebook and YouTube. Contest entries are due March 25.

This is the second year of the local safe driving contest. Last year's contest winner was Micaela Swenson, who created the poster "Pocket the Phone or Pocket the Ticket."

Teens are at greatest risk on the road due to inexperience, risk-taking behind the wheel, speeding and distracted driving. Teens also have the lowest seat belt use rate of all age groups, according to the Office of Traffic Safety.

The 2013 contest is hosted by Douglas County Safe Communities Coalition with partnering sponsorships from AAA MN/Iowa, Bremer Bank and H. Boyd Nelson, Inc.
