Local students advance to state geography bee
Matthew Bittman, a 6th grader at Woodland Elementary School in Alexandria, and Andrew Sheets, an 8th grader at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria, were notified by the National Geographic Society that they are eligible to compete in the 2010 Minnesota Geographic Bee.
Bees were held in schools with 4th to 8th grade students to determine each school's Geographic Bee winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.
The 2010 Minnesota Geographic Bee will be held at St. Cloud State University on Friday, April 9. The state winner will receive $100, the National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World, and a trip to Washington, D.C. where he/she will represent Minnesota in the national finals in May.
