Local parent recognized for leadership in home and community
February was National Parent Leadership Month and a Parent Leader of the Alexandria Area Circle of Parents was recognized.
This is the third Parent Leadership Award received by leaders of the Alexandria Area Circle of Parents, in addition to last year’s awards of Outstanding Children’s Program and Outstanding Chapter.
On February 28, Lisa Tickhill and 11 other parents were honored and celebrated for leadership roles in their homes and communities by Minnesota Communities Caring for Children/Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota (MCCC/PCAMN).
The event took place under the Capitol Rotunda. It celebrated the contributions parents make to communities and recognized professionals who partner with parents to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.
Parent leadership occurs when parents gain the knowledge and skills to function in meaningful leadership roles, represent a “parent voice” to help shape the lives of families and communities, as well as shape the direction of programs and policies that impact them.
Tickhill joined the Alexandria Area Circle of Parents last spring and quickly became an active member, parent leader and is treasurer of the advisory team.
After reading the book The Whole Brain Child, Tickhill was inspired to establish and lead book discussions with area parents. This work continued with the development of a companion presentation, which has been shared statewide with parent groups, educators and social care professionals.
Tickhill also supports the provision of local Parent Cafes, which have highlighted the impact of adverse childhood experiences.
The Alexandria Area Circle of Parents meets every Tuesday at the Alexandria YMCA. The evening starts with a light meal at 6 p.m., followed by parent-led discussion, sharing of ideas and support. There is a separate children’s program. The meetings are free.
