Letter: Noise is mushrooming out of control

To the editor:

In response to the Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down editorial, “Is Alexandria too loud:” Yes! Our fine city has huge noise pollution problems. These range from leaf blowers, lawn mowers, auto, truck and motorcycle exhausts, to the deafening Viking Speedway and everything in-between.

All of these noise pollutants are mushrooming out of control. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized noise pollution as a real problem. Their studies, and those of others, have revealed that noise pollution actually degrades our quality of life, even threatening our health.

Alexandria has city codes to deal with these particular issues (Sect. 9.85; Subd. 1 – Noise; and Subd. 2G – Exhausts). Unfortunately, neither is followed nor enforced.

Yes, there are noise decibels high enough to burst our eardrums. “Is Alexandria too loud?” Do you think!
