Let's Get Growing workshop set

A Let's Get Growing workshop is set for Saturday, March 24 from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Alexandria Technical and Community College Office and Information Technology Center. Registration is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Coffee and snacks will be served.

Following is the schedule of events:

Keynote speaker - 8:45 to 9:45 a.m.

Stan Tekiela will speak about loons. He has spent more than 20 years studying and photographing loons for his book, Fascinating Loons. He is a naturalist, wildlife photographer and the originator of the state-specific field guides.

Session one - 10 a.m. to noon

• Turning Twigs to Trees addresses fruit propagation. Class size is limited to 20; bring utility knife and heavy gloves. There is an extra charge of $2.50 payable upon registration.

• Garden design principles.

Session one - 10 to 11 a.m.

• Gardening and landscaping with iris, part one.

• Dahlias.

• Companion plants: Pretty plant pairings.

• Sedum-first ya see dem, den ya love dem.

• Frogs of our area.

Session two - 11:15 a.m.

to 12:15 p.m.

• Container water gardens.

• Weekend gardener: Horticulture for busy people.

• Dahlias.

• New perennials for 2012.

• Gardening and landscaping with iris, part two.

Session three - 1 to

2 p.m.

• Your garden time table.

• Winter sowing and seed starting.

• Bulbs as a component of the full season garden, part one.

• Container water gardening.

• Organic lawn care.

• Landscaping with daylilies.

• Blueberries.

Session four - 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

• Ornamental grasses.

• Hosta la vista - the big world of little hostas.

• Bulbs as a component of the full season garden, part two.

• Natural disasters in the garden

• Landscaping with daylilies.

• Season extension for northern gardeners.

• Unwanted invaders - plants and other pests.

To register, send name, address and phone number along with payment to Let's Get Growing, 720 Fillmore Street, B090, Alexandria, MN 56308. Choose from the following sandwich choices: veggie, turkey, ham or beef. Also indicate which classes you are interested in attending.

Cost is $30 per person and includes refreshments, lunch and sessions. Make checks payable to Douglas County Master Gardeners.

The event is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension - Douglas County. All proceeds will support the Douglas County Master Gardener projects.
