Lenarz, Payne break records in Chain of Lakes Triathlon

Former Alexandria resident Jen Lenarz and Columbia Heights' Matthew Payne shattered the old Chain of Lakes Sprint Triathlon records in the overall female and male divisions at the 2009 event this past Saturday.

Lenarz, 34, a resident of Apple Valley, set the new record time in the female division at 1:04.29, beating 2007 winner Lynette Bacon's time of 1:06.07.

Lenarz won this year's female division by more than two minutes. Julia Mairs of St. Paul and Angie Mracek of Rosemount finished second and third, respectively.

Matthew Payne set the new mark in the men's division by almost three minutes. He finished in a time of 0:53.44. Nick Langner set the old record in 2004 with his time of 0:56.34.

Joe Schneiderhan was the top finisher from Alexandria in the overall men's division. Schneiderhan came in at 1:00.54. That was good for a seventh-place finish overall in the division. Mark Storhaug and Brad Lake followed him as the second and third fastest finishers from Alexandria.

It was Michelle Verant leading the Alexandria participants in the overall women's division. She finished with a time of 1:14.06. Coming in right behind her was Kelly Wencl at 1:14.23. Steph Bower rounded out the top three finishers from Alexandria with her time of 1:16.30.

Rick Theiry, Mark Astrup and Berg Gordy were the top finishing relay team from the area. They finished in a time of 1:02.18.
