The Brandon-Evansville Legion baseball team got a good game from Zach Carlson on its way to an 8-4 win over Hancock on Tuesday night.

Carlson started on the mound and gave up just one run through five innings. He had no walks and struck out two as he let his defense work behind him.

"For only his second time pitching this year, he did really well," head coach Trent Hintermeister said. "He controlled the zone, got ahead in the count. I just told him that when you get that first strike, life becomes so much easier as a pitcher. He pounded the strike zone."

Billie Juul came on and worked a clean sixth inning before Tom Bosek closed things out in the seventh. Bosek gave up two hits, but two errors on defense compounded things as Hancock scored three runs, just one earned, before Bosek closed the door.

"For whatever reason, all season long, our defense hasn't really played well when Tom's on the mound," Hintermeister said. "We've seemed to boot the ball around when he's come in to pitch. It's been frustrating for me and I know for Tom, too."

Brandon-Evansville overcame that with another strong night offensively. Carlson had a lot to do with that, too, as he collected two hits and two RBIs. Nolan Bartholomew was the catalyst with two hits and four RBIs, which included a bases-clearing double in the late innings that blew open the game. Juul also added two hits and an RBI.

The win moved Brandon-Evansville to 11-2 on the season before a doubleheader against Morris that was scheduled for last night, Thursday. That's the regular-season finale for Brandon-Evansville before the playoffs start next week.
