Lakers volleyball team returns four starters
Four returning starters to the Minnewaska volleyball team are expected to provide some additional experience in 2014.
The Lakers finished 9-15 in 2013, but the additional returning varsity experience this year should give them an opportunity to improve. The returning starters from 2013 include senior right side hitter Ariel Ostrander, junior middle hitter Emma Middendorf, sophomore setter Taylor Amundson and sophomore outside hitter Ashlyn Guggisberg.
“Returning four starters from last year helps with the youth and lack of varsity experience we had last year, consistency from a returning setter with more experience,” head coach Linda Mills said.
The Lakers still have a few open positions they need to fill from last year. Newcomers will need to step in to open libero and outside hitter roles, and the Lakers also lost middle hitter Carly Stewart for the year after she went down with a basketball injury over the summer.
Mills has tabbed six players who she expects to compete for varsity playing time, including senior defensive specialist Becca Goettsch, senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Lundebrek, junior outside and middle hitter Kaylee Glover, junior right side hitter Courtney Erickson, junior defensive specialist Madi Lundebrek and sophomore outside and middle hitter Abby VerSteeg.
Sauk Centre is expected to be the team to beat in the West Central Conference while Mills said Marshall is favored in Section 3AA.
