Knights finish in top half at Perham
The West Central Area cross country team had a successful day in Perham last Thursday as the boys team took fifth place and the girls team took eighth.
The boys team was able to move up in the team results thanks to their ability to pass people at the end of the race.
“There is a left hand turn about 100-yards from the finish line and when our boys made that turn, it was racing time,” head coach John VanKempen said. “There [are] many points that can be gained in that race because there are still runners to pass and our boys certainly went for it that day, passing people down the stretch.”
Alex Toms led the boys with a 12th place finish in 16:54. Other top finishers included Devin Nelson in 31st (17:56), Ryley Nelson in 34th (18:03), Ethan Olson in 47th (18:21) and Bryce Paulson in 49th (18:22).
Van Kempen was also happy with the girls cross country team as many of the runners finished with personal records.
“Many of our girls set personal records too this day, and that’s what we’ve asked of them, to improve as the season progresses,” he said.
Kylee Fernholz led the Knights with a 19th place finish (16:02), followed by Abby Van Kempen in 23rd (16:05). Other top finishers included Ella Van Kempen in 32nd (16:22), Hannah Frisch in 85th (18:18) and Ashton Blair in 17th (18:21).
