The Lakes Area Quilters recently announced the winner for its third annual block contest: number 23, made by Karen Runge (third row down, second from left). Twenty-six others also contributed holiday blocks of red, green and cream. The theme for this year was Christmas, and blocks had to be 12.5-inch unfinished blocks. They were displayed at the Douglas County Fair in Alexandria. The blocks will be made into quilt tops for Quilts of Valor, a nonprofit organization providing quilts for servicemen in veteran's hospitals. As the winner, Runge will receive a one-year membership to Lakes Area Quilters and a ribbon. Instructions for next year's contest will be available in local quilt shops in April as well as the 2014 Douglas County Fair Premium book.
