Join master gardeners on landscape arboretum tour
Join the Douglas County Master Gardeners on a bus tour to the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on Wednesday, June 12. The bus loads at the Kmart parking lot in Alexandria at 6:45 a.m. and departs at 7 a.m.
The first stop will be at the private garden of Don Untiedt and Tim McKee in Plymouth, who combine their love of roses and waterfalls into a lavish landscape that includes an English hybrid tea rose garden, Japanese woodland beds and waterfalls flowing to a sandy beach on Schmidt Lake.
Afterwards, enjoy browsing and shopping at Tonkadale Greenhouse in Minnetonka. Tonkadale has an extensive selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, roses and tropical plants, as well as fairy garden accessories.
The afternoon can be spent touring the garden vistas of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska.
This year's theme is Summer in Motion and is highlighted by Gophers in the Gardens. Look for 10 five-foot tall Goldy statues in various displays. Indoor exhibits will highlight Goldy Gopher history and University of Minnesota plant introductions.
Grab lunch at the arboretum restaurant or stroll through the gardens until departure at 3 p.m. The group will return to Alexandria around 6 p.m.
The cost is $30/person, lunch not included. Pre-registration with payment by cash or check is required. No refunds will be made after Friday, June 7.
Registration brochures are available at University of Minnesota Extension, Douglas County, 720 Fillmore Street in Alexandria and online at www.extension.umn.edu/county/douglas under hot topics.
