Join the 'Friends'... join the fun!
Join the Friends of the Library. Your membership will contribute to library needs and materials. You will be part of a group that believes a strong vibrant library is good for the whole community.
There are opportunities to participate in fundraising activities, author visits, special events and a book club.
Many of our members volunteer to help with our largest fundraisers, the Used Book Sale and the Used Bookstore.
Some people enjoy sorting the donated books, which are then boxed and stored until the sale or placed in inventory to sell at the store. Others help at the August book sale setting up, cashiering, keeping the tables full or cleaning up at the end of the day. Still others like to spend their time at our bookstore helping customers.
Each year the Friends sponsor a variety of author visits and special events. The last two years we were involved with the Community Read project. We purchased books that were available to the public and hosted speakers and discussion groups.
Recently, we partnered with the Maritime Museum to republish the book And Then Came Summer. During an afternoon event, Rachel Barduson spoke about the history of the lakes area and generations past.
On October 30, Chad Lewis, author, researcher and lecturer on topics of the strange and unusual, will be a guest speaker in the large meeting room at the library. All events sponsored by the Friends are free and open to the public.
The Friends book club meets the fourth Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the library's large meeting room. The group determines what books will be read during the upcoming year. Books are provided. No one needs to locate or purchase a book. There is a small quarterly fee - $4 for members and $5 for nonmembers - collected every three months. The money is used to secure books from other libraries. The selection for October is Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah.
Where do your membership and fundraising dollars go? We support the Summer Reading Program and all other library youth and children's activities.
We updated the selection of computer help books in the reference section. The new furniture in the children's section, computer lab and by the bookstore was also purchased by the Friends.
This year we earmarked several thousand dollars to expand the eBook library.
There are four levels of membership: Individual - $10, Family - $15, Business - $30 and Patron - $50. Memberships are renewed annually. Forms are available at the library. We would love to have you join our group!
