John Risch, 84
John Risch, 84, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa.
A memorial service was held April 4 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jennifer Lutz officiating.
John was born November 28, 1929 in Brookings, South Dakota, the son of Gus and Verna Johnson Risch.
He received his bachelors degree in engineering from South Dakota State University and served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. While in military service, John enjoyed playing the trombone.
On June 20, 1954, John married Lorraine Ardelle Lee in Arlington, South Dakota.
John was civil engineer with the State of Iowa Department of Transportation. He was instrumental in the creation of the Iowa bridge inspection program. As a resident maintenance engineer, he had resided in Sheldon, Denison and Ames.
His memberships include the Sons of Norway and the Calvary/Living Word Church in Alexandria, Minnesota, where he resided until moving to Iowa City in 2011 to be near his daughter. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Pathways Adult Day Care for the support and care they provided to John.
Survivors include his two daughters, Katharine (Tim) Thompson of Iowa City and Karen (Tim) Heib of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kristian and Sonja Thompson; three siblings, Robert Risch and Lynette (Loren) Johnson, both of Estes Park, Colorado and Earl Risch of Chicago; and his special friend, Mildred Dreher of Nelson.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Marian Miller.
