JHS students learn through service
Students in Kelly Hilbrands' sixth hour senior social II class at Jefferson High School (JHS) in Alexandria took part in a service-learning project for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society - Minnesota chapter.
They put on the third annual car wash at JHS on May 16, from 12 to 3 p.m., where students washed more than 100 vehicles and sold hot dogs, chips and pop.
Students were given the opportunity to learn more about MS from Kathy Fischer, who visited the classroom, and from testimonials by classroom paraprofessional Cher Colby, who has had MS for several years.
Several businesses supported the cause, helping with T-shirts and food to spreading the word with media signs.
"It would not have been a success without the community supporting my students," Hilbrands noted. "I know they appreciate the community supporting them and are empowered to do such great things. Thank you again to all who contributed to the efforts. It was a memorable service-learning project."
