Jefferson High School students present 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'
Fringe-style dresses, the Charleston, “Judas Hole-style” speakeasies, tap dancing, and a determined flapper heroine will take the stage as the Jefferson High School (JHS) theater department in Alexandria presents the jazz-age musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.
JHS’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie will run Thursday through Saturday, April 24-26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School (DMS) auditorium in Alexandria.
Set in the 1920s, Thoroughly Modern Millie is loosely based on the film of the same name, starring Julie Andrews. It follows a young girl from Kansas, Millie Dillmount, as she sets out to make a life for herself in New York City. Millie raises her hemline, bobs her hair and sets her eye on her boss, Trevor Graydon III.
Alongside Millie on her journey are a handsome charmer with a mysterious past, Jimmy Smith, and a well-mannered rich girl, Miss Dorothy Brown.
At one point in the show, songstress Muzzy gives Millie a simple piece of advice that leads to Millie’s final decision in the end: “Follow your heart.”
Director/choreographer Jessica Chipman hopes that line will tug at the audience’s heartstrings.
“Many people can relate to being at a crossroads where we don’t know which path to take, like the predicament Millie finds herself in,” she said. “Muzzy’s three simple words are a great reminder in those times.”
With a book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan and music and lyrics by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan, Thoroughly Modern Millie took to Broadway in 2002, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The score features songs including Gimme Gimme, I Turned the Corner, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Speed Test.
Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students. They can be reserved by calling the JHS activities office at (320) 762-2142, extension 4530.
