A new tradition has started here at the Echo Press.

Sprouted by the idea for employees here to make a push for healthy lifestyle choices, the office recently started three different clubs for people to get outside and exercise with each other. These clubs include one each for walkers, bikers and runners.

I immediately made the decision to join the Echo Press run club, and so far it has been a lot of fun.

I was already an experienced runner before we started meeting as a run club, as I spend many hours every week on a training plan for cross country ski racing in the upcoming winter. But during this training I often find myself running or roller skiing alone.

This is not the case every Thursday afternoon when the Echo Press run club meets to hit the trails. So far the group has three members – Al Edenloff, Eric Morken and I. But we are always on the search for more runners in the office to join the group.

Generally we run about three to four miles at a time, choosing different routes around the community to give us a nice change of scenery. The amount of distance we travel on our runs seems to grow every week.

But the club is about more than just running. It also gives us the opportunity to get outside of the office and talk about something other than work. It is the perfect opportunity to hang out and get some good exercise in the process.

Every company should consider having these types of extracurricular groups as a change of pace for employees. It offers a chance for coworkers to become familiar with each other outside of the day-to-day grind of their jobs. Not every company devotes resources to give employees the chance to work toward a healthy lifestyle, something I am appreciative of here at the Echo Press.

We will have to wait and see what happens with the run club once the weather turns cold, but right now it gives us a great chance to go outside and enjoy the nice summer weather. Plus we are improving our physical fitness at the same time.

So if you are ever out on a Thursday afternoon and you see the Echo Press run club jogging around town, be sure to give us a honk or a wave. We will be sure to give a friendly wave back.
